Train caboose to be lifted over power line at museum in Elkhart
ELKHART, Ind. -- The National New York Central Railroad Museum announced Indiana Michigan Power was out on Wednesday afternoon covering a power line for safety in preparation for the museum's1905 wood sided caboose to be lifted from its current location to the rolling stockyard next to the Conrail caboose.
The 1905 caboose currently sits near the Main Street entrance of the museum.
Museum officials say the immediate plans are to build an open pavilion to cover and protect the caboose as they finish the exterior restoration, including new siding and paint.
Officials add there will also be a fundraiser, "Rockin' the Rails," on August 24, to help cover the costs.
"Rockin' the Rails" will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the museum. Admission is $5 and kids 6 and under are free. You can view the official Facebook event page for details.
Friday at 7:30 a.m., officials say Crane Industrial from Granger will lift the caboose and set it in place, with the job estimated to take four hours.
The NIBCO Century Flyer train rides will be available Friday after the caboose move is completed.
