The Marion County So. Florida / Elkhart County Jail ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- On Thursday, the Indiana Office of the Prosecuting Attorney announced formal charged filed against two men in their 70s for a murder from 1981.
The two men, the 76-year-old Robert L. Sage and 71-year-old Daniel Martin, have been charged for the Murder of Donald Wasserman in August of 1981.
Wasserman's body was found with multiple blunt force injuries and skull fractures on an embankment near the Toll Road overpass and C.R. 131 in Elkhart County days after he was reported missing by his wife on Aug. 16, 1981.
Wasserman's death was ruled a homicide, but according to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, the ensuing investigation remained unsolved due to insufficient evidence until it was reevaluated by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit in 2024.
During the renewed investigation, Martin was re-interviewed, providing more details that were corroborated by additional scientific evidence uncovered by investigators.
Martin was arrested on Friday, Mar. 27 in Elkhart. Sage was then arrested on Monday, Mar. 30 in Florida, pending extradition.
Martin's initial hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, when a trial date is planned to be set.
