Two Goshen parents charged for the death of two-week old son
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Amanda Fahlbeck and Nick Hunsberger have officially been charged with Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death stemming from the death of a child in May of 2022.
Court documents show that on May 8, 2022, Fahlbeck called 9-1-1 to report that her two-week-old son was unresponsive at her home in the 58000 block of C.R. 23 in Goshen.
"Medics arrived shortly thereafter and took the victim to the hospital where he was later declared deceased," authorities said.
Fahlbeck told police that she woke up around 8 a.m. and the child was unresponsive. She said that the victim was in bed with her, Hunsberger and another child overnight.
"Fahlbeck admitted that she knows that it not safe for the baby to be in her bed since she has lost child to co-sleeping before," court documents state. "Given the outward signs of intoxication displayed by [Fahlbeck], a search warrant for her blood was obtained."
Toxicology reports for both Falhbeck and Hunsberger indicate their blood contained amphetamine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and norfentanyl.
Traces of methamphetamine were found on plastic baggies that authorities took from the house and officer's located Narcan containers along with two prescriptions for Naloxone, a drug that is a live-saving measure meant to treat an overdose of narcotics.
After an autopsy was performed on the victim, it was determined that cord blood positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and morphine, drug abuse and tobacco dependence by mother, and complex sleep surface sharing contributed to the infant's death.
Hunsberger's will be in court today, April 11, while Fahlbeck's next court date is April 18.
