Two people killed in house fire in Dowagiac

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- Two people died in a house fire at a home on E. Telegraph early Thursday morning, according to the Dowagiac Fire Department.

The Dowagiac Fire Department responded to 310 E. Telegraph at 6:45 am. and found the home with flames visible in the front and side of the home.

Once fire crews were able to enter the home and search, two victims were found in a room on the second floor.

Autopsies will be conducted on the victims.

Firefighters say it appears the fire started on the first floor and up the stairs, blocking the only exit.

There were no smoke detectors in the home.

The Fire Investigation Unit says the fire’s cause is still under investigation but it appears to be accidental.

The following agencies assisted: Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Sister Lakes Fire, Cassopolis Fire, Dowagiac Police Department, Pokagon Tribal Police, SEMCO Gas, Midwest Energy, and American Electric Power.
