WATERVLIET, Mich. – Two people continue to suffer from serious injuries after the small plane they were in crashed near Watervliet Municipal Airport Friday evening.

Berrien County officials say the small aircraft was taking off from the airport around 7:20 p.m. when it failed to gain necessary altitude and crashed into a wooded ravine area near the runway.

The two occupants of the plane, 27-year-old Edward Maloney of Fruitport, Michigan and 36-year-old Jonathan Amundsen of Winterhaven, Florida, were able to remove themselves from the craft but were seriously injured.

Both Maloney and Amundsen were transported to Lakeland Hospital by ambulance.
