SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Unity gardens are holding free haircuts and hot cakes in part of a monthly service project to reassociate inmates back into society.
The barbers are trained and are finishing up their time in the South Bend re-entry program. The main purpose is to let inmates that are still in jail / prison that are in their last two or three years of their prison sentence to go and help the community. This allows them to bond with people while making connections, as well as reacquainting themselves with the norms of society.
"Our guys are in the last two or three years of their prison sentence they've earned their way into this program, and one of the things we stress is that we get them out into the community to visit and get to know the people and make connections, as well as reacquaint themselves with the norms of society," stated Greg Burns the Community Engagement Coordinator at the South Bend community re-entry center,"
Burns continues, "and so, it's very important that we do things like this."
The barbers also go to other places in the community such as Charles Black Center and Tolson Community Center.
