U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to hold safety performance open house for Cook Nuclear Plant

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced staff will discuss the 2024 safety performance of the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant during an in-person open house on July 10.
The public is invited to attend the event at the Silver Beach Center, 333 Broad St. in St. Joseph from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
The NRC says staff will discuss their assessment of the plant's 2024 performance.
Staff members responsible for plant inspection and oversight, including resident inspectors based at the site, will be in attendance to address any regulatory or technical questions and concerns.
The NRC announced the Cook Nuclear Plant operated safely for 2024 and the performance indicators were green, or very low safety significance.
The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. Officials say the colors start at green and increase to white, yellow, or red based on the safety significance of issues.
Cook will remain under the NRC's baseline level of oversight, which includes thousands of hours of inspection yearly.
NRC officials say inspection findings or performance indicators with more than a very low safety significance trigger an increase of NRC oversight.
Cook's plant inspections are performed by two NRC resident inspectors and inspection specialists from the agency's Region III Office in Naperville, Ill.
