Valentine's Day shooting on Valentine's Lane in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind.--- Thursday morning on Valentine's Day around 5:30 a.m, an unidentified man was shot in the stomach in his home on Valentine's Lane.

The victim was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

ABC 57 talked with a neighbor who lived a few feet away from the shooting. He says he didn't see anything, but the fact that this incident happened, it was too close to home.

Chase Roberts lives on the corner of Valentine's Lane. He says he was getting ready for work until he heard something but wasn't sure what it was.

"This morning I was getting ready to go to work it was around 4:30 - 4:45 this morning and I thought I heard something but I wasn't sure," Roberts said.

Turns out, a man was shot in the stomach. When Roberts found out what happened he immediately contacted his wife who was still at home with their kids.

"When I did find out about it, the first thing I did was call my wife to make sure she and the kids were okay. She and some of the children were still home, I wanted to make sure everything was okay with them. I was a little worried that something like this happened, it's never a good thing that it happened especially when it is this close to home," Roberts said.

Robert and his family have been living in the mobile home community for the past year. They were surprised something like this happened in their area.

"This is a very quiet neighborhood we lived here for close to a year we moved here last July and nothing remotely close to here never happens its a very quiet neighborhood," Roberts said.

According to investigators, the victim is in stable condition.

The scene is still being investigated; as the shooter is still on the loose.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact investigators at (574)-295-2821.
