VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- While Hoosiers might not be as familiar with Van Buren County, Michiganders in the southwest region of the state likely pass through it with every trip up north.  This week, Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott was chosen as the 2025 Sheriff of the Year by the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association.

"Sheriff Abbott is the distinguished recipient of the Terrence L. Jungel Sheriff of the Year Award, an honor that recognizes exceptional leadership, dedication, and service within the law enforcement community," the MSA said.

"Selection for this prestigious honor is made by a committee of fellow Sheriffs from across the state, making it true peer recognition. The award criteria include demonstrating initiative, imagination, and exceptional performance in office; meaningful community involvement that exceeds the scope of the Sheriff’s regular duties; and efforts to elevate the Office of Sheriff at the local, state, and national levels."

Officials say the award is presented annually to a Michigan sheriff who exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to public service.

"The award acknowledges a sheriff who has made outstanding contributions to law enforcement, provided extraordinary service to their community, and actively supported the betterment of the MSA," the organization said.

"Sheriff Abbott’s dedication to public safety, community engagement, and the advancement of law enforcement practices has earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues statewide. This award is a testament to his leadership, vision, and tireless commitment to serving the people of Van Buren County and beyond."
