NOW: Vets2Refs program offers new purpose for former veterans and first responders

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A new and growing program is helping former military members and first responders transition to sports officiating: finding a new purpose in the game.

It’s part of a nationwide effort to recruit more referees while also helping veterans re-enter civilian life with confidence.

"It feels good to be a part of it and what we do, and we feel that that joy in the mission and what we're doing like each time we talk to somebody, and then we hear back from them as either issues that they're having or the success that they've gotten to the field and just providing some purpose for them and a new passion," said Co-Founder of Vets2Refs Bill Krueper.

After serving two decades in the Navy and transitioning into civilian life, Krueper decided to channel his love of sports to create Vets2Refs.

Since its launch just over a year ago, Vets2Refs has grown to more than 100 veterans and first responders across 20 states.

Co-founder Jeb McNally says it all starts with signing up online, and the training begins from there.

They offer two online training programs including RefReps, which teaches high school sports rules, and RefMasters, which is led by current and former NBA, NFL, and MLB officials, focusing on advanced techniques and game management.

McNally says the organization is a way to say thank you to veterans and first responders for a chance to give back to those who’ve given so much.

"We know we're not going to solve the problem with just our organization, but veterans and first responders are naturally gifted at helping others, so when they're out on the field, they're very strong leaders, and they're in control of their emotions, which is a very important aspect for a high school sports official," McNally said.

The program is still accepting applicants online.
