Warsaw man arrested for OWI and drug related charges

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. -- The Marshall County Sheriff's Office reports dispatch received a call about an erratic driver in a gold Dodge minivan traveling east on U.S. 30 near U.S. 31 around 8:20 a.m., Wednesday.

A sergeant with the sheriff's office was on patrol in the area and located the suspect vehicle. He then followed the van for a short distance to the Pilot Travel Center and contacted the driver, identified as 36-year-old Mathew W. Hellums of Warsaw.

During this time, the report states Marshall County deputies and Indiana State troopers arrived on scene to assist.

Authorities say they spoke with Hellums, who failed field sobriety tests, and probable cause was found that he was under the influence of a controlled substance.

The report states a subsequent probable cause search of the van yielded syringes, suspected methamphetamine, and suspected fentanyl.

A search of Indiana court records later found Hellums had also been arrested in both Tipton and Noble Counties in July of for separate drug related charges.

Hellums was then arrested and charged with Possession Methamphetamine, Possession of a Narcotic Drug, and Possession of a Hypodermic Syringe, all level six felonies, and Operating While Intoxicated - Endangering, a class A misdemeanor.

A probable cause affidavit was submitted to the court, and Hellums' bond was set at $5,000.
