MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. -- On Wednesday morning, the Indiana State Police were called to help assist the Marshall County Sheriff's Office with a suspect who barricaded themselves inside a home as police were attempting to evict and arrest them for criminal trespassing.
The standoff started around 9:50 a.m. in the 13000 block of U.S. 6 in Marshall County and the suspect was identified as 63-year-old Jennifer Japa.
Authorities say Japa was the resident at the home, but that the property had been sold and she refused to leave.
"Japa is alleged to have pointed a long gun at the deputies as they spoke to her," ISP said. "Japa retreated into the house and refused to come out. Deputies also retreated and requested assistance from the Indiana State Police."
ISP responded by calling in additional troopers, negotiators, and the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team and after several hours of speaking to Japa, she was taken into custody around 1:23 p.m.
U.S. 6 was shut down to traffic while police were on the scene but has since reopened.
Japa is charged with Criminal Trespass and felony Pointing a Firearm. She was taken to the Marshall County Jail.
