NOW: Local reactions to the Supreme Court’s ruling on transgender athletes

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- For the first time, the highest court has weighed in on the debate over transgender athletes.

The Supreme Court ruled that "states can exclude" those born biologically male from womens' and girls' sports.

Haley Proctor, an Associate Law Professor at the University of Notre Dame, shared her thoughts on the opinions of the justices with opposing viewpoints:

"It's carefully reasoned on both sides, and I think it's helpful for the American people to see. It's a debate that we obviously have very strong moral feelings about, but it's a really close legal question, and the history is complicated."

Indiana 2nd District Representative Rudy Yakym released a statement affirming his approval of the ruling:

"As a dad of two girls, both of whom are student athletes, I can't tell you how happy the SCOTUS ruling on female sports makes me. Today, we protected girls' sports and sent a message to the radical left that biology STILL matters."
