Woman trying to make the gridiron as a referee

METAIRIE, La. — A woman is trying to make her way out onto the football field. But not as a cheerleader, but as an NFL ref.

Sarah Thomas is taking part in the officiating development program.

She has been working on the sidelines officiating since the 1990s.

And Thomas is already the first woman to officiate a Single-A football game in her home state of Mississippi.

"I've never set out to be  the first or be a pioneer, but I embrace if that does occur, but I have to say individuals out here working, male, female, black, white, collectively we're one," said Thomas. "We're together on this, we're on a team and we're all striving for the perfect game and the same goal."

Thomas has a day job, she's actually a pharmaceutical representative.
