Work on LaSalle Avenue begins June 12

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Road work on LaSalle Avenue, from the St. Jospeh River to Eddy Street, begins on Monday. Travel lanes will be reduced during the work.

The first phase of the project runs through mid-August. Work will happen on the south side of the road, from Hill Street to the river.

Drivers will only be able to travel west on LaSalle from St. Louis to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards.

The intersections at Hill Street and Niles Avenue will be open for drivers turning north.

Phase two runs from mid-August through early October, where work will happen on the north side of LaSalle from Hill to the river.

Westbound traffic will still be able to move through the area and the intersections at Hill and Niles will be open for traffic to turn south.

The third and final phase runs from early September through early October. During this time, LaSalle will be repaved between Eddy Street and the river.

The entire project is intended to slow traffic speeds and create safer bike and pedestrian routes, including the addition of a protected bike lane.

Other plans for the project include adding on-street parking, decorative lighting, bumpouts and new landscaping.
