10-digit dialing transition period begins Saturday

The transition period for 10-digit dialing in Indiana’s 219 and 574 area codes begins Saturday, April 24.

Starting Saturday, residents in these area codes are encouraged to begin dialing 10 digits, instead of seven, to make local phone calls.

This six-month transition period will ease residents into the mandatory 10-digit dialing beginning on Oct. 24, 2021.

You can still use seven-digit dialing until Oct. 24.

This change is to accommodate the national “988” National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, designated by the Federal Communications Commission.

All telecommunications providers in the United States are required to implement the 988 hotline by July 16, 2022.
