11-Year-old girl struck in hit & run accident while riding bike

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – An 11 year-old girl was hit by a car while riding her bike on Monday afternoon. This happened near the intersection of Dubail Avenue and Fellows Street. She was taken to Memorial Hospital but is expected to be ok.

Three girls were rinding their bikes along Fellows Street when the girls said a car jumped the curb and hit the 11 year-old.

The girl told police the car that hit her was a four-door, older white car.

Police said it was last seen heading south down Fellows Street.

Annie Spearman who lives just feet from where the hit and run happened called 911 when she saw the little girl lying on the curb.

"She was bleeding from the arm, the elbow, her foot, and her flip flop was off," said Spearman.

She said it’s just scary to think what could have happened.

"I was frightened because I know the damage that could be done and it really frightened me because this is a busy street," said Spearman.

Most importantly she said it’s a good lesson for all drivers to be aware of what’s around them.

"It’s summer here, these kids are riding a bike and we should take some responsibility as parents and drovers to watch out for everybody," said Spearman

The girl is back home recovering as of Monday night. Her mother told ABC 57 she is really banged up and bruised, but they're lucky she's ok.
