22-year-old Nappanee man charged with Attempted Murder and Arson against mother

Elkhart County Court

NAPPANEE, Ind. -- Christopher Hochstetler, a 22-year-old Nappanee man charged with the Attempted Murder and Arson Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury of his mother, had his initial hearing Tuesday morning.

According to a probable cause affidavit, in the early morning hours of Nov. 12, Elkhart County deputies responded to a call from Hochstetler, who alerted them that he had tried to set his home on fire while his mother was still inside.

At roughly 1:09 a.m., Nappanee police officers were notified that Hochstetler was at the Nappanee Police Department, where he was soon after placed in handcuffs and read his Miranda Rights.

According to the affidavit, Hochstetler explained that he used a candle lighter and rolled-up toilet paper to start the house fire because he "did not like his mom".

Allegedly, Hochstetler placed the toilet paper and a wooden log in front of his mother's bedroom door, and several more logs around the house. His mother was woken up by the fire alarm in the home.

Hochstetler further stated in the affidavit that he intended to kill his mother, that he let the family's cat out of the house to save it from the fire, that no one else lived in the home, and no one told him or assisted him in the arson.

Hochstetler has no further court dates at this time.
