8-Year-old run over by moped
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – An eight-year-old is recovering after a teenager ran him over with a stolen moped and took off.
Police say this happened on the corner of Van Buren and Sherman streets.
“All of a sudden we heard a big thud and I heard a lady scream, 'Oh lord, someone call 911,'” said Kerriann Bowman.
Bowman ran outside to see what was wrong.
“He said, 'Mom it is Kameron,'” said Bowman.
Her 8-year-old son Kameron had been hit by a moped.
“They said he went high in the sky and the way he fell, it looked like he had snapped his neck,” said Bowman.
According to the police report, a 15-year-old boy was speeding up and down Van Buren Street on a stolen moped, didn’t see Kameron, hit him and then took off.
Kameron was rushed to the hospital.
“Gave him three staples in the back of his head and one on the side and he had a concussion,” said Bowman
“The scrapes still kind of hurt, but it’s ok,” said Kameron.
Witnesses and police went after the 15-year-old who was running on foot.
“Police told me they had the fellow who hit my son and they were going to take him to the J.J.C.,” said Bowman.
But the next day, Bowman saw the 15 year old walking around the neighborhood.
“The young man was released,” said Bowman.
She wants to know why.
According to the police report, police did take the 15-year-old to the Juvenile Justice Center, but the J.J.C. refused the boy because they felt the crime was not serious enough.
“I want them to step up, make this boy show some type of responsibility for his actions,” said Bowman.
