MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A man was listed in critical condition following a shooting at West Jefferson Apartments Tuesday night.
The shooting happened at approximately 10:08 p.m. in the parking lot of the apartment complex on Liberty Drive.
Mishawaka Police say a male victim was taken to Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound and was listed in critical condition.
A witness who lives in the apartment complex heard the shots and ran out of his apartment to help the victim.
"Probably around 10 o'clock I heard about 10 gunshots," said Shawn Calvano who lives in West Jefferson Apartments.
Calvano said he asked a neighbor what the sound was and ran to the victim's aid.
Another witness used his jacket to help stop the bleeding.
"The other guy that was there, he had pressure on his wound, I was trying to hold the guy's head, trying to get a pulse and he was starting to choke on his vomit," said Calvano. "It was just a very scary situation. I was just trying to sit there with him and tell him, 'You're going to make it, just be alright, you're going to be alright, you're going to make it.' You know hopefully when the paramedics got there everything was okay and I'm glad that they got there as quick as they did because I hope everything's okay."
Police say the suspect fled the scene but they know exactly who they are looking for.
