Around-the-clock crews to complete major road project in five days

ABC 57

ELKHART, Ind. -- On Monday, the Elkhart Public Works and Utilities Department will start a major road improvement project on Johnson Street between Bristol Street and Beardsley Avenue. The unique part of this particular project is a schedule that will have three shifts of crews working day and night to complete the project in just five days.

"This 24/7 approach is designed to minimize the traffic disruption Johnson Street, which is one of Elkhart’s busiest thoroughfares," said Elkhart Director of Communications Corinne Straight. "Designed and executed entirely 'in-house' by city staff, this necessary infrastructure project will cost $350,000. Not only is this approach saving taxpayers millions, it is saving drivers from months of traffic disruptions and inconvenient detours."

The city will hold a ribbon-cutting on Johnson Street when construction is complete.

“We know construction season is a frustrating inconvenience for drivers and we always look for creative opportunities to mitigate that inconvenience,” said Mayor Rod Roberson. “I am very impressed with our crew at Public Works; Engineering, Streets, and Traffic. Their ingenuity is saving millions of dollars and greatly minimizes the traffic disruptions on one of Elkhart’s busiest roads.”
