Arrest made in shooting outside of Ameriwood


DOWAGIAC, Mich.—Police say they have identified multiple suspects and made one arrest in connection with a shooting outside of Ameriwood Industries on January 21.

Police arrested a 20-year-old South Bend man, who is being held at Elkhart County Jail on charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, armed robbery, carjacking, conspiracy to commit carjacking, conspiracy to commit unarmed robbery, unarmed robbery, and felony firearm.

Officers are also requesting charges for a 38-year-old woman from South Bend who they say was involved in the incident.

Both are currently awaiting extradition proceedings to return to Michigan.

According to police reports, a 21-year-old man from Hartford who works for Ameriwood, was arriving for his shift on January 21 when a group of people allegedly robbed him of his marijuana and packaging materials, carjacked his vehicle, and shot him.

The victim was treated for several gunshot wounds and released from the hospital on January 23.

Police say the suspects travelled from South Bend to Dowagiac in a stolen Lexus SUV.

During the investigation, Nappanee Police Department alerted officers that they had been involved in a vehicle pursuit of a Lexus SUV early Tuesday morning and had taken three of the vehicle’s occupants into custody.

Officers learned the Lexus had been stolen from an auto repair shop in Mishawaka.
