'Ash Road Pothole' ice cream flavor, bumpy road to Crystal Springs Creamery
OSCEOLA, Ind. -- Midwest summers; defined by ice cream and road construction. One local creamery is combining the two by dedicating one of their ice cream flavors to the poor road conditions that lead up to their shop.
“It’s worth braving all the potholes for the ice cream,” says Michele Litteral, a weekly customer of Crystal Springs Creamery.
You have to get through the bumps in the road before you can taste the ‘Ash Road Pothole’, an ice cream flavor that perfectly describes the journey to Crystal Springs Creamery in Osceola.
“Every year this road gets traveled so much that there’s a lot of gravel, you have enough cookies to represent some of that gravel being filled in when they put that wonderful tar mixture into some of the potholes,” describes Litteral. “That fudge drizzles all the way through the center just like you’re weaving in between the potholes to get here.”
It's quickly become a fan favorite not just for its rich, dark chocolate flavor, but for its subtle dig at the local street department.
“It rose to the top of the list; we now bring it home by the gallons,” Litteral says.
Customers believe the attention has actually started to fix the issue.
You can see where some of those potholes have been filled when driving on Ash Road in front of the creamery.
Litteral says for the year “Ash Road Pothole’ has been her favorite ice cream, she's noticed slight improvements on her drive, but many say it could be better still.
“A little smoother, a little more enjoyable, right, just like ice cream,” Litteral says.
Instead of naming an ice cream flavor after a stubborn pothole, you can always report them to the county road department or INDOT if it’s on a highway or state road.
