Berrien County experiences election computer glitch

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- The polls have been closed for nearly 20 hours but some Berrien County candidates are just now learning the results of their races.

The Berrien County Clerk's Office said its tabulation computer crashed around 9 p.m.Tuesday, just an hour after the polls closed.

Employees spent the night and part of Wednesday counting ballots by hand and entering data into spreadsheets.

"We of course, feel awful that these types of things happen," said Lousie Stine, Berrien County Clerk. "We know how very important this is to people and we've done the very best we can."

Stine said the computer that broke was less than 2 years old.

An IT specialist is still trying to figure out what happened.
