BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Berrien County Road Department will "adopt" what's called a "rural right-of-way" along county roads, and plant milkweed, the primary food source for monarch butterflies. They will no longer mow the outer three feet of a right of way so that milkweed can grow, one of the primary food sources for Monarch butterflies.
This agreement was approved by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. This authorizes the road department to be part of a statewide effort to preserve the habitat of monarch butterflies through the County Road Association of Michigan.
