NOW: Bike path complete Smarts Streets Project

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Friday, Mayor Pete Buttigieg led the ceremonial grand opening of a bike path wrapping around the downtown area.

The mayor led a group of bikers on a path from the Century Center to Doctor MLK Boulevard and back as a way to celebrate the grand opening of this new path.

The city says over 90 million dollars of new private investments have popped up all over downtown since the Smart Streets Initiative was announced.

Mayor Pete is hoping this new path leads to even more economic success for local businesses and says while this was the final phase of the project, more streetscape work is on the way.

“We also have more improvements coming around the city based on the successful smarts street model including an extension of the…on western that’s got the new streetscape work and some other areas were looking at for the future, and as I’ve said there are some tweaks to be made, on average only 3 minute difference across town but there are times when it gets pretty rough for example using the Colfax garage when show downtown we think we can make some fixes that will deal with that,” said Mayor Buttigieg.
