Bikin' Brothers cycling group promotes safety as E-Bike popularity surges
GOSHEN, Ind. -- If you have taken any local bike paths, you may have noticed a new speedy ride hitting the trails. E-Bikes are surging nationwide and even in Michiana, and local police departments are working to ensure everyone is safe on these pathways.
These laws separate E-Bikes into three classifications. Sergeant Ted Bohner breaks down the classes, “Class one is going to have pedal assist only, with a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour. Class two is going to have pedal assist and or a throttle as well. Then class three is where things get a little bit different. That's pedal assist only, and it has a max speed of 28 miles per hour. Class three also has an age restriction, so you're going to have to be at least 15 years old to operate a class three.”
If you are under 18 you must wear a helmet on class three E-Bikes whether you are the driver or passenger.
