Bridge Academy Alternative School gives away construction materials

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- Do-it-yourselfers in Benton harbor got free building supplies on Friday.

Bridge Academy Alternative School gave away used construction materials.

They are all from demolished houses.

A program the school ran with the county taught students construction skills by letting them deconstruct houses that would have been demolished.

Now, all of those supplies were given away to anyone with building plans in Benton Harbor.

"We wanted to make sure we were targeting the local homeowners that really wanted to make a difference in their community and just didn't have funds to buy all the materials," said Chris Fielding of Bridge Academy.

Students at Bridge Academy are taking down five more houses and a commercial building.

They said they will have another giveaway, but a date has not yet been set.
