Brothers from Illinois charged with felony Auto Theft in Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. -- Two Illinois men have been charged after police say they, along with two others, drove from Peoria to Goshen to purchase a 2014 Jeep Cherokee with fake money on June 6.
Documents filed with the Elkhart Circuit Court state that 20-year-old Phillip Nakhil Ellis, of Peoria, Ill. his brother, 19-year-old Ta'Quén Pierre Webb, of Chicago, a juvenile who is not being named by authorities, and a woman who has not been charged with any crime, made the trip from Peoria to Goshen to purchase the vehicle one of the men found on Facebook Marketplace.
According to the woman, she, Ellis, and Webb picked up the juvenile while still in Illinois, but she did not know who he was. She later said she saw he had a handgun and what looked like some kind of black face covering attached to his head.
The four made the trip to a residence on Manor Haus Court in Goshen where, authorities say, Ellis, Webb, and the juvenile attempted to purchase the vehicle with "play money" around 1 a.m.
At some point, a confrontation began and one of the men grabbed the title to the vehicle out of the seller's hand and the three men drove off in the stolen Jeep.
The seller then jumped into a passenger vehicle and tried to chase the suspects. He ended up crashing that vehicle and was not able to catch up with the suspects.
He was able to identify the car that the four pulled up in, and, using that information, police were able to find the woman who had left the Goshen home after dropping off the three suspects.
While the Wakarusa Police Department was chasing the Jeep, the Goshen Police Department was trying to find the black Hyundai that the group drove from Illinois to Goshen.
Court documents state that at roughly 1:25 a.m. a Wakarusa Police Department patrolman advised over the radio that he was going south on S.R. 19 from C.R. 42 attempting to catch up to the black / gray jeep that was traveling at high rate of speed.
"[The patrolman] then observed the vehicle turn west into a driveway ... [on] S.R. 19," authorities said. "The Nappanee Police Department located the vehicle behind a garden at [a] residence. The vehicle was unoccupied."
A Nappanee police officer who was driving north on S.R. 19, north of C.R. 50, located a black Hyundai with Illinois registration driving south near the area of where the Jeep was located on S.R. 19.
The car was pulled over and the woman began cooperating with authorities.
Just after 5 a.m., Nappanee police located three black males riding bicycles on US 6, near C.R. 101.
"[The patrolman] advised that he had all subjects on the ground at gunpoint," court documents state. "[The patrolman] stated once he initially came in contact with the three males, they stated they were going back to Chicago."
Additional officers arrived and the three were taken into custody.
Authorities say a black handgun was found near the location where the three suspects were located with a patrolman saying the gun was located within 10-15 feet of one of the bicycles that the suspects were riding.
