Buttigieg Rallies Against Redistricting in Indiana
ABC57. ---Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg returned to Indiana today, speaking at the Indianapolis Statehouse to rally Democrats against proposed changes to the state’s congressional map.
Buttigieg called for lawmakers to reject any early redistricting, a move he says would be driven by political pressure from Washington ahead of the 2026 midterms. He labeled the redrawing effort as gerrymandering and urged the audience to hold their representatives accountable.
Typically, districts are redrawn every decade following the census. However, President Donald Trump and other prominent Republicans are pushing for early redistricting in Indiana. Buttigieg warned that a new map could give Republicans a 9-0 edge, skewing representation in favor of one party.
"They want the outcome of the election to be decided before you even get the chance to vote… Some people say this is a divisive issue, I think this is a unifying issue, because voters don't want to be cut out of this political process,” said Pete Buttigieg.
Currently, Republicans hold a 7-2 advantage in Indiana’s congressional delegation. Buttigieg believes the GOP push to redraw maps reflects the party's struggle to maintain popular support in the state.
To make any changes, Indiana lawmakers would need to hold a special session before January, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars.
