Child hit by pickup truck taken to hospital by helicopter.

ELKHART, Ind. -- A pedestrian was hit by a car on CR 108 in Elkhart.

When our crews arrived on the scene, police had already a large section of CR 108 crossed off with yellow tape.

Neighbors said they saw Dajeianna Smith, only 12  years old, was laying in the road near a tree.

The 56-year-old driver from Edwardsburg said he didn't see the young girl walking along the road, then he hit something and people began to shout at him.

Smith was airlifted from the scene with trauma to the head and chest area.

Our reporter, Jillian Mahen, observed that the girl's shirt was still laying on the ground in the road.

The accident is still being investigated.
