City of South Bend offering free lead testing for children
SOUTH BEND -- The City of South Bend is partnering with multiple organizations to provide free lead testing for children this month.
The free screenings are for any child between one and six years old. According to a press release, community health experts will be on hand to talk with parents about childhood lead poisoning risks and interventions.
Experts say young children are especially at risk for lead poisoning because their brains are still developing. People with lead poisoning don't usually look or feel sick, so a blood test is used to screen for it.
The free testing is happening at three places on three different days in October:
Kennedy Academy on Thursday, October 10 from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
Lasalle Branch Public Library on Wednesday, October 16 from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
Nuner Fine Arts Academy on Thursday, October 24 from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
