City of South Bend sets move out date from County City Building

NOW: City of South Bend sets move out date from County City Building

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — After more than 6 decades in the County-City Building, the City of South Bend is officially moving out.

City officials confirmed that all city offices will begin operating from the new South Bend City Hall on Monday, October 13.

The new facility, located at the former South Bend Community School Corporation headquarters on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, will consolidate more than 200 city employees from three separate buildings into one location.

Boxes from the mayor’s office on the 14th floor of the County City Building are already being packed, following a year long archiving effort.

City officials hope the move will improve efficiency and make access to city services easier for residents.

The renovated building will include a customer service center in the lobby, updated elevators, new flooring, and more parking.

The move and renovations are expected to cost the city $10 million, a price Mayor Mueller called a good deal compared to maintaining the aging County-City Building.

The future of the building remains uncertain. County offices will remain for now, though officials are exploring options after recent interest from a potential buyer.

The signage is up on the new building reading “South Bend City Hall,” but it is unclear if their name will be removed from the old building. Mayor Mueller said the city hasn’t discussed removal with the county but acknowledged it “could help for clarity.”

St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners President Carl Baxmeyer confirmed that the city is the only one packing up for now. He said there have been no updates on the building’s future since an interview with ABC57 in July.

Free two-hour parking will be available for visitors at the Wayne Street Garage next to the new City Hall.

More information on the move is available on the city’s official website: https://southbendin.gov/new-city-hall
