NOW: Community gathers for 9/11 stair climb

STEVENSVILLE, Mich. -- At least 100 people or more, including veterans and first responders, attended the 9/11 Stevensville Stair Climb Thursday morning to honor those lost during the tragic terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Climbing up and down the steps represent what it was like for first responders and people trapped in the Twin Towers that morning.

Steven Phenegar, co-organizer, stated, "It's an extremely important event to keep going. What's happening is we're about a generation past when the event happened in 2001 and we can't let that memory die, to just go into history books. We want to keep that alive, especially giving respect to our local first responders. We want to realize the sacrifice that they make, a tribute to the ones that fell that day. So, it's important for the military, it's for the first responders, and it's important for the community to kind of keep together. We really had a different focus on Sept. 12. There was a lot of unity there, and we need a little bit of that today. It's a very divisive time, and we want, we need, that community to come together."
