NOW: Counterfeit 100-dollar bills being passed

BOURBON, Ind. -- Beware of bogus 100-dollar bills being circulated in Marshall County.

Two businesses in Bourbon told police someone tried to pay with fake 100-dollar bills Sunday. One business didn't fall for it, but the other one did.

"I was informed today, Dollar General, the same subject went in there Sunday morning to try and do the same thing, the clerk didn't have her marker pen, so she went to the back to get the marker pen and she was feeling the bills, she could feel it was maybe a little bit off, so when she went to the back, he grabbed the bills and walked out of Dollar General," said Sergeant Carl Amsden of the Bourbon police department.

After the person allegedly tried to unsuccessfully use the fraudulent bills at Dollar General, he later made the same attempt at a nearby Family Dollar, where the bills were used to buy gift cards. The fake money was handed over to the secret service.

Sergeant Amsden called the fakes "high quality"; the phonies even passed the counterfeit marker test. He wants people to be aware of the feel of the money, as well as the serial numbers on the bills.

"We've had several try to pass but most of the time, you can tell, it's not as good of a fake or we've had one that said motion picture movie only, so this was a pretty good one. The only real way, if you look at it, it feels a little different, and the serial numbers matched, so two of the bills serial numbers matched," said Sergeant Amsden.

An employee at Dollar General tells ABC57 that for the foreseeable future, they will not be accepting 100-dollar bills.
