Couple escapes car crushed by tree

CANBY, Ore. -- An Oregon couple is recovering from minor injuries after their car was crushed by a tree.

The 100-foot fir tree snapped and crashed onto their parked car while both of them sat inside.

First responders said they expected the worst but got quite the surprise when the couple was able to escape.

They got out through a small opening in the passenger side window. Both are expected to be just fine.

"They must have had a bright light shining on them," said Division Chief Troy Buzalsky, Canby fire Department. "If you look at the passenger's compartment, especially the driver's compartment, there's about a space the size of two loaves of bread in there, how the husband survived is just remarkable."

Investigators don't know why the tree fell. Neighbors say the wind wasn't blowing that hard at the time.
