DOWAGIAC, Mich. - A 25-year-old man was found dead in his home on the 200 block of Oak Street in Dowagiac on Saturday. Police are considering everything in the investigation.
There is not much on Oak Street Monday to tell you something strange happened here over the weekend. “Everybody knows everybody so for something like that to happen, yeah, it’s a shock,” says Gregory Rellis, a neighbor of the victim.
Rellis says it was a much different scene Saturday. “I didn’t think anything of it, maybe (it was) a disturbance. Then I found out somebody was dead in the house,” Rellis says.
Inside the home, Dowagiac Police were called to around 1:30 p.m. to investigate a man, 25-year-old Joshua Fancher, deceased in his bed. “People that are 25-years-old and in good health don’t end up dead in bed in the morning. That’s why we’re trying to figure out 'was there something that happened?' or was there not,” Steve Grinnewald with Dowagaic Police Department.
Police are not releasing details on the evidence they found but are not ruling out anything. Grinnewald says there just aren’t any answers right now. “At this point we’re not 100% sure how he died or what happened. Were still investigating it to figure it out,” he says.
Not having an answer is what concerns Rellis “If it was foul play, yeah, that’s scary. That means the person is still out there and we have kids in this community. So yeah that would be scary,” says Rellis.
Rellis also says somthing like this would take a toll on the family. “I would hate for someone to lose someone that way and not know what happened," he says. "My heart goes out to them.”
According to police, an autopsy was performed Monday in Grand Rapids. Results were not immediately available.
