Drought is improving in Michiana
Drought is finally lessening in Michiana!
With the help of more rainy days these past few weeks, we’ve made a significant dent in the season’s rain deficit.
We’ve closed the gap on the deficit entirely for this month - in fact, we’re seeing a small surplus of rain from where we usually stand at this point in July.
We’re still below average in terms of rainfall for the season, but with wet conditions recently and more rain in the forecast, drought is expected to continue improving.
In line with the improving drought, both corn and soybeans have also seen changes for the better in condition over the past week.
The July 10 report showed 53% of Indiana corn under good to excellent conditions, a 1-percent increase from last week. Soybeans also saw a small increase, jumping from 53% to 55%.
Topsoil moisture has seen the most change with 60% of topsoil seeing adequate conditions in Indiana this week, up 5% from last week.
