SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department reports crews responded to the 1200 block of Freemont Street around 7 a.m. Wednesday for a structure fire.
Upon arrival, it was learned three dogs were inside the home.
Two of the dogs tragically passed away.
The third dog was cared for by medics on scene for over 20 minutes, being given oxygen and water until the South Bend Animal Resource Center arrived.
Fire officials say the dog was initially in poor condition but showed great improvement by the time SBARC took over.
No other injuries were reported, and the fire was under control in 10 minutes.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
