Elkhart County Coroner determines person involved in standoff died by suicide
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. - The Elkhart County Coroner determined a person involved in a SWAT standoff late Monday night likely died by suicide.
The coroner gave the preliminary ruling on Wednesday.
An Elkhart Police officer was struck by gunfire in the incident but was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The situation began around 10 p.m. Monday, when the Elkhart County Regional SWAT team served a search warrant in connection with a drug dealing investigation in the 700 block of W. Franklin Street.
After the officer was shot by gunfire coming out of the residence, the SWAT team set up a perimeter and were able to convince every occupant but one to leave the home.
There’s no evidence law enforcement discharged a firearm while trying to get into the residence, according to police reports.
When they got inside the residence, at around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, they found one person. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
This incident is still under investigation.
