SWAT standoff ends in person's death, officer injured

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating this afternoon following an officer-involved shooting and SWAT standoff that occurred in the 700 block of West Franklin Street Monday around 10 p.m.

Officers report that the shooting happened as Elkhart County Regional SWAT was assisting with the execution of a search warrant.

Elkhart Police Department Corporal Jonathon Carver was shot during the altercation. Carver was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

Following the initial conflict, a combination of Elkhart Police Department officers and SWAT members set a perimeter around the area and deployed chemical irritant agents into the house, according to the department. Officers say the Elkhart County Bomb Squad also utilized an EOD robot to get a visual inside the residence and locate possible threats.

Police say there's no indication that any SWAT or EPD officers fired their weapons during the that stage of the situation.

SWAT entered the home around 1 a.m. Tuesday and found a so-far unidentified adult man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital but died from his injuries.

Police say all other residents from inside the home were secured and no arrests were made.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit will remain in charge of the investigation.
