ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- This tax season the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office is warning community members about "ghost tax preparers," a scam the IRS also warns of.

Authorities recommend you choose your tax preparer carefully.

The IRS warns of individuals who:

• Refuse to sign your tax return
• Ask you to sign a blank return
• Promise unusually large refunds
• Base fees on refund amounts

It's recommended you ensure your preparer has a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number and signs the return.
