Elkhart Police investigating alleged attempted abduction

ELKHART, Ind.--- Elkhart Police are investigating an alleged attempted abduction that happened on Tuesday afternoon. The incident happened on Goshen Avenue near Elkhart High School East.

Jennifer Gilbert says her 14 year old daughter was taking a walk when she was approached by a man she did not know.

"She walked there, she was on the phone with her friend, and she starting walking home and she was going to cross the street and a man stopped and approached her," said Gilbert.

Gilbert's daughter says she continued walking but the man drove up ahead of her and waited on her to catch up to him.

"And then we she went to continue to go walking he jumped out from behind a tree and asked her if how old she was, if she would come drink with him, do drugs with him," said Gilbert.

Gilbert says her daughter then called her for help. After getting her daughter away safely, Gilbert says she then followed that would be subject and called Elkhart Police. The alleged suspect was pulled over by police on Middlebury Street but no arrest was made.

"I was petrified that I wasn’t going to get there on time or that she was going to get taken," said Gilbert.

Gilbert says its important that parents discuss stranger danger with their children before these incidents happen.

"I’m very glad I had that talk with her because had her so aware of girls are missing and this area isn’t safe in that aspect, I don’t know what would have happened," said Gilbert.
