Elkhart Police recognizing two officers for quick action that saved a life

ELKHART, Ind. – The Elkhart Police Department is recognizing Sgt. Ryan Huff, Ptl. Matthew Wilder and the Elkhart Communications Center for quick thinking and action under pressure that saved a victim’s life.

Dispatch put out a call on September 20th at 5:12 p.m. of a person with gunshot wounds to both legs.

Sgt. Huff and Ptl. Wilder responded to the scene in less than two minutes, quickly took in the situation and put a tourniquet on both legs.

Medics arrived shortly after and transported the victim to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Doctors are crediting the officers for their quick action and use of tourniquets that ended up saving the victim’s life.
