MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- At approximately 5:14 p.m., crews responded to a residential fire at 59700 Dogwood Road.

Upon arrival, smoke and flames were showing from the front of the house.

Crews made an initial offensive attack that eventually turned into a defensive operation due to heavy wind conditions and deteriorating building conditions.

The fire was under control at 7:10 p.m.

While putting out the fire the homeowner arrived and verified no occupants other than a K9 were inside the residence. 

The K9 did perish from the fire.
