MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A $5,000 prize was awarded to Fred J. Hums Elementary as part of a wellness challenge.
Approximately 4,700 students participated in the “This Counts Wellness Challenge” which encourages students to engage in after-school activities such as playing soccer, golfing or biking.
Hums Elementary School Principal Jeffrey Yoho is proud of his students.
“We would promote all their activities they would do at home as well as in gym class, so at the time we had track, so that was helpful for all our track runners, but also enticing the parents, when they were at home too, to exercise with their children, whether it’s at softball practice, baseball practice, soccer practice. We have a lot of athletes, so that really increased our minutes here at Hums,” said Principal Yohe.
Physical activity for all involved increased by about 15 minutes a day.
