Free home lead inspections available to City of Benton Harbor residents

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. - Officials with the City of Benton Harbor are urging residents to take advantage of free home lead inspections as service line replacement work is nearly completed.

Inspections are available for all housing units on the Benton Harbor water supply, whether rented or owned and regardless of the age of the home.

There are also no household income requirements.

Free lead abatement services are also available.

Pre-2014 bathroom and kitchen faucets used for potable water will be replaced regardless of water sample results.

Lead service applications are available online or by calling 866-691-5323.

In total, 99.3% of lead service lines have been replaced in the city.

Bottled water and lead-reducing filters are still being offered to city residents.

Residents can get a free filter at the Berrien County Health Department, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or through the mail by calling 844-934-1315 or filling out an online form.

Water bottles can be picked up at the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor Fettig Youth Campus and at the Southwest Community Action Agency.
