Government may expand Takata airbag recall

Takata airbags are again the focus of a safety investigation.

Leaders from the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation are searching for answers, this time with a focus on the Takata SSI-20, which are side airbags that are present in millions of vehicle models.

General Motors was the first to issue a recall last week for potentially defective side airbags.

A new, widespread recall of side airbags would add to the largest recall in United States history of front and passenger side airbags.

19 million cars were issued recall notices after automakers discovered that airbags could rupture, causing metal shrapnel to spray at passengers.

Nearly 1 in 10 Takata airbags that have ruptured have ended in death.

To find out if your vehicle is included in the air bag recall check your vehicle identification number.

If your vehicle is under recall, call your local dealer as soon as you can to make an appointment for a free remedy.
