Habitat for Humanity to build 14 homes in Elkhart County

NOW: Habitat for Humanity to build 14 homes in Elkhart County

ELKHART, Ind.-- The Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County is building up a new 14-home subdivision with the help of future homeowners as part of their "Floor Blitz" project.

Currently, four homes are being built simultaneously, with the other ten homes to be built over the next two years.

Future homeowners in this subdivision will be required to complete 250 hours of "sweat equity", meaning that they will assist in building their future home or neighboring homes as part of their payment, allowing for the homes to be affordable and have a 0% interest mortgage.

"Elkhart county needs places for people to live that are affordable." President and Executive Director of Habitat or Humanity of Elkhart County, Greg Conrad, tells ABC57. "And so, this is enabling us to change the trajectory of lives for a lot of families"

Future homeowners will also have 40 to 50 hours of training on financial management, homeownership, and being a good neighbor.

Families in the "Floor Blitz" program face a timeline of about 6 to 18 months before moving into their new homes.
