Heavy winter conditions stretch into February keeping road crews busy
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. — What started as an early and demanding winter is now stretching into February, keeping shovels, plows and snowblowers working overtime across St. Joseph County.
ABC57 News reached out to the county for comment Thursday afternoon but did not receive a response.
However, county officials have previously shared their plans for the week.
Road crews are focusing on main roads Thursday and Friday before turning their attention back to cul-de-sacs and subdivisions.
Inches on top of inches of snow have already kept crews working around the clock throughout the winter.
Neighbors who have lived along Ironwood Road for decades were out Thursday afternoon and said this has been the heaviest winter they have seen in years.
Despite the conditions, residents say county road crews are doing the best they can to keep up with the 1,275 center lane miles they are responsible for, especially after several milder winters and a number of budget cuts over the years.
“They’ve done a pretty good job up until now considering the amount of snow we’ve had. You can only do so much. We got so many streets. They do come around. They got our little side street, which tends to be one of the last ones they get to,” said Marty Wolfe, a St. Joseph County resident.
With slightly warmer temperatures on the way, road crews say they are shifting their concerns to slush heading into the weekend.
